Special thanks to all our Haunted Hallways volunteers and scarers. I am pleased to announce that the cameras last evening showed no activity from the basement. There were actually notes written with some degree of legibility from many of the ghouls that inhabit the basement every Halloween saying that they may never come back because they were afraid of the Dake Haunted Hallways scarers! Our total ticket sales reached $3,300! All money will go to the Irondequoit Food Cupboard. Stay tuned for an ice cream party for all volunteers and scarers some day in the next few weeks with representatives from the food cupboard. Great job to all!

I enjoyed seeing all the school spirit this past Saturday at the homecoming football game. I was able to cheer for our Irondequoit Mod B Soccer Team as they travelled to Fairport and played the Martha Brown team, the school I retired from. I was able to visit both teams during halftime and wish them luck. Though our Dake team did not win they played a very tough defensive game. Special shout out to Archer Insoaaco for stopping close to 50 Fairport shots on goal.

Though my Buffalo Bills lost a very close game to their AFC East rivals the Miami Dolphins, the underlying theme after the loss is that they will learn from this game. A sign of any healthy organization or healthy person is to look for ways to learn from any failure or shortcoming.

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize Richard Cavazos. Texan and Mexican-American Richard E. Cavazos was the first Hispanic person to become a four-star general in the United States Army. He graduated from Texas Tech University and went on to serve in the Korean War as the commander of the 65th Infantry Regiment. He then served in Vietnam as commander of the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Division. He became the first Hispanic four-star general of the United States Army in 1982, and received a number of military honors, including the distinguished service cross, the silver star, the bronze star, and the purple heart.

Mr. Dunn shared that this weekend is Homecoming and an opportunity to celebrate our sports community by attending numerous sporting events home and away. It is also an opportunity for our school community to come together as one in this community celebration. He mentioned the importance of modeling our school district’s core and community values outside the walls of Dake Jr. High School. After Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico in 2017, he gathered 19,000 volunteers to serve 3.5 million meals to distraught residents who had limited access to electricity, clean water, and food. In 2019, Andrés fed furloughed workers during a month-long government shutdown.

Beginning in 1968, Hispanic Heritage Month was originally observed as “Hispanic Heritage Week” under President Lyndon Johnson, but it was later extended to a month during President Ronald Reagan’s term in 1988. Throughout the month, we will be highlighting famous Hispanic Americans as well as sharing some important history. 13% of our student body self-identifies as Hispanic or Latine. In the Dake Student Resources Schoology Course, there is a Power Point, which provides an overview of the month as well as interesting facts.

September 7, 2022 : A Day

Good morning, everyone. Happy first day of school! Today is an A day, so make sure you are following your A day schedule. We are so excited to welcome students back that were with us last year and welcome new students who are joining us. This is Mrs. Maves, the Principal of Dake. Our assistant principals are Ms. Akwaa, who will be supporting 7th graders, and Mr. DiMartino, who will be supporting 8th graders. On behalf of the faculty and staff, we are very excited to have you here.

You will be receiving copies of your schedule during first period today. There have been recent schedule changes so please check these schedules carefully and get rid of any old versions.

Over the next few days, you will hear more about our community values and expectations during your classes. Here is a brief overview of our community values:

Mutual Respect- We care about each other as human beings

Shared Pride- We celebrate one another

Shared Purpose- Our goal is learning

Mutual Support- We help each other

Cell phones and Air Pods must be stored in your locker from 8:00-2:55 PM daily. If you need to make a call during the day, you can ask to come to the main office and use a phone in there. If you have not visited your locker this morning, please plan to do so immediately following the announcements. 1st period teachers, please support students in ensuring that cell phones and Air Pods are stored.

Lunch periods are split into two parts. 7th graders will report to the cafeteria for the first half of lunch, while 8th graders will report to their lunch study hall. Halfway through the period, 7th graders will transition to their lunch study hall location and 8th graders will report to the cafeteria. 7th graders, you will see that your schedule says “study hall after lunch” but shows up above your lunch. You will still report to lunch FIRST and then lunch study hall SECOND.

All lunch study halls today will report to the All Purpose Room for a presentation from your administrators. We will be sharing information about our expectations and the Code of Conduct.

If you have a class on your schedule that takes place at IHS, your teacher will meet you in the main office hallway, in front of the eagle. This will occur today and tomorrow. Your teachers will show you how to get to IHS and your classroom and will escort you back.
